TWITCH ETIQUETTE GUIDE

Mutual respect for your fellow Twitch users and their communities can go a long way towards creating new friendships, partnerships, and a sense of belonging but there’s no two ways about it; Twitch has a learning curve. The platform isn’t exactly user-friendly, which can sometimes make finding your way around difficult.

Here are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to networking and socializing on Twitch in our simple Twitch etiquette for you to follow. Welcome to Twitch.

  • DIFFERENT CHANNEL DIFFERENT RULES

You can find these on the main page of their channel below the video. Most rules are common sense, like no offensive or derogatory language, but some streamers might have more specific rules for their channel.

  • BOT TIME OUTS

Automated chat bots are programmed to time out links, caps lock spam or to many symbols. Don't worry if this happens.

  • STREAM INFO LOCATION

Channels have various information below the video. The channel title will almost always tell you what the streamer plans on doing during the broadcast. Twitch tiles will tell you information about the streamer and more.

  • SUBSCRIBER MEANING

Pressing the subscribe button on a YouTube channel is the same as pressing the follow button on Twitch. On Twitch the subscribe button is a further way to support your favorite streamers from $4.99 a month.

  • ADVERTISING

Don’t promote yourself, your work, or other streamers on a broadcast unless the streamer asks you to. It’s not fair to the streamer or to anyone in the chat.

  • CHECK THE SCHEDULE

Never tell a streamer to play a different game. Return at a later time or check their schedule to watch them play the game you want to see.

  • SUB BEGGING

Never ask or beg to be gifted a sub. This is rude. If you're not able to afford a subscription try using you're free Twitch Prime sub.

  • ARGUING

Never argue a time out in the channel. You'll probably end up being timed out again. Chat box moderators will often explain the reason on Twitch private message or Discord to help resolve any issues.

  • DON'T BE A CREEP

Streamers already have to put up with trolls; the last thing they need is some creeper hitting on them. Don't make remarks about a streamer's appearance, ask about significant others, or anything else that might make them feel uncomfortable.

  • EMOTE SPAMMING

Don't spam your own Twitch sub emote over and over. Its fun to show you're own emote but context is the key in this.

  • VIEWER NUMBER

Refrain from commenting on the viewer counter. If the streamer isn't worrying about the number increase or decrease then you shouldn't either!

  • DON'T CALL OUT LURKERS

Don't shout out people you see lurking in the chat list as they have chosen to leave a lurk and help support the streamer.
